Fall Foliage

Early fall is becoming an increasingly popular time to visit Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. The big crowds of summer have gone, but all facilities are still open. The days are usually sunny and warm, while evenings can be cool, forecasting the coming change of the season.

Along the coast, the leaves change color more slowly than they do inland, away from the relatively warm ocean water. While you will find color in northern and western Maine as early as mid September, the peak for fall foliage viewing on Mount Desert Island usually occurs around the end of the first week in October. Columbus Day weekend is a great time to plan a visit to see the leaves, but make your arrangements early, because lodging can be scarce at the last minute.

The State of Maine operates a fall foliage hot-line which provides regularly updated estimates on the progress of the leaf color as it spreads across and down the State. The number is 1-800-533-9595 (for in-state and Canadian callers use 207-623-0363). Also, the Maine Department of Conservation maintains a Fall Foilage web site on the Internet. (The site is not maintained during the off-season, but still is worth a visit if you are planning a fall trip).
Locals have long considered September and October to be the best months of the year on Mount Desert Island and in Acadia National Park. Early fall is a beautiful time for hiking the many trails of Acadia or for a liesurely walk along the restored carriage roads. Come and see for yourself - we know you will have a great time!
