How to Get to Mount Desert Island
and
Acadia National Park

Jordan Pond Road

Driving to Maine is easy! Who said you can't get there from here?

ONE if by land, TWO if by sea, and FLY!

BY LAND: North and south routes in Maine are I-95, the Maine Turnpike, and Route 1. You probably will enter Maine at Portsmouth, N.H. - that is, if you are coming from the south. Now, if you come from the west, consult a map as there are many routes to pick up I-95, the Turnpike, or Route 1.

Remember, Ellsworth is your destination to pick up Route number 3 to take you to Bar Harbor and Route 102 to take you to the western half of Mount Desert Island. BUT - let's fill in some spots before you get here. I-95 and the Turnpike - speed limit 65 miles per hour - are the speediest way to get here, but not the shortest. By way of this route, you will exit at Bangor/Brewer and pick up Route 1A to Ellsworth where you will see green and white signs directing you to Route 3 and Mount Desert Island. You will leave Rt.1 and Rt. 1A in Ellsworth.

Scenic and slower is the drive up Route 1. In the summer we have the usual construction delays and the added traffic of "sightseers". If you are not in a hurry and have the time, you will be amazed and pleased at the many sights along this coastal route. Stop in some of the villages and visit the shops. Make note of the flea markets, antiques and historic spots to come back to once you have reached your destination. Detailed maps are available to you from us - use our e-mail.

No Car!?! Concord Trailways provides scheduled bus service from Boston to Bangor year round and provides a shuttle service from Bangor to Bar Harbor during the season. Reservations may be required - (888) 741-8686 or http://www.concordtrailways.com Also, during the season Greyhound (Vermont Transit) runs a daily service between Boston and Bar Harbor.

By Sea: Multiple ports are available if you sail up the coast. Use your charts and call the Harbor Master where you wish to drop anchor. He/she will supply you with any information you need to dock in that area. There is FREE local bus service in the summer for all ports on Mount Desert Island.
