The society is a center for research and education and presents exhibits at the Old School House and Museum on Sound Drive in Mount Desert and at the Somesville Museum and Gardens in Somesville.

Enjoy an up-close experience with marine life. At the oceanarium at 1351 Route 3 take a guided tour of a salt marsh and the Maine Lobster Museum. At the working lobster hatchery we take you on a fascinating tour to see mother lobsters & baby lobsters & the hatchery process. At the Seal Cove Auto Museum you will find a wide variety of antique autos and motorcycles, from an 1899 DeDion Bouton to a 1924 Mercer, with special emphasis on cars from the "Brass Era" (1895-1917). The Naturalist's Notebook is a unique shop and exploratorium that combines nature, art, science and a fun sense of curiosity about the world. It's great for kids age 2 to 102. There are children's programs, mind-stretching exhibits and all sorts of intelligent, beautiful, playful items for sale, including more than 1,000 book titles. Last June The Naturalist's Notebook was named of the 50 Things to Do in Maine This Summer by the Bangor Daily News.
